Women with very large breasts often experience a variety of health problems, including intense back pain and skin irritation, due to the excess weight and low center of gravity of their breasts. During breast reduction surgery, excess breast tissue, skin and fat are removed to create a smaller, lighter and firmer breast. If necessary, the nipple and areola may be lifted and/or reduced. The goal of breast reduction is to create a nicely contoured breast that is proportionate to a woman’s body. After breast reduction, patients are often relieved of the physical discomfort of large breasts.

Dr. Ackerman was one of the first surgeons in the U.S. to perform the so called "vertical technique" of breast reduction. It is a superior technique that allows for better contouring of the breast, eliminates the large transverse scar under the breast, and achieves a more lasting lift. Dr. Ackerman designed the Ackerman Areola Marker for this technique.

		This patient has markedly large and droopy breasts. She experienced the typical symptoms of large breasts, including neck and shoulder pain. After breast reduction surgery, she achieved excellent esthetic results and a significant improvement in functionality.
		This patient has significantly large breasts that are quite droopy. After breast reduction surgery, she achieved a pleasant breast shape and a significant decrease in breast volume. Her scars are fading nicely at this time.
		This patient has very large and droopy breasts, and exhibits all of the typical symptoms of macromastia. Her symptoms were significantly relieved after breast reduction surgery, and she achieved a notable improvement in the shape, positioning, and size of her breasts.
		This patient developed marked breast asymmetry, with her right breast being significantly larger than her left breast. After breast reduction surgery, the symmetry and overall shape and size of her breasts have significantly improved.
